Pattern Puzzles as PDF downloads.

Having these fabulous Pattern Puzzle designs on the blog with all the pattern making instructions is wonderful.  But sometimes you might just want to try them out when the internet is down or simply not available to you.  Or maybe you don't want to search through hundreds of posts to find what you're looking for.  Either way I've had many requests for these instructions to be available as PDF downloads and I've finally done something about it.

These documents are PDF copies of the pattern making instructions that come with each of the posts.  THEY ARE NOT SEWING PATTERNS, they are the instructions for you to make your own sewing patterns.  I've put them together in response to your requests and I've made them downloadable for convenience and better access.  In return all I ask for is a small fee to help keep the lights on.

I've started by working on my most popular posts first.  Where I have cut the pattern and made samples there is much more information included and the PDF will cost more.  If you have a favourite pattern puzzle and it's not featured please let me know through the comments section on the post in question and I'll get right to it.

Pattern Puzzle - The Kimono Wrap Dress

We had a fantastic time on Saturday with the #PatternPuzzle.  Jump over to FB and check out the most amazing contributions made by our fans, with drawings no less.  :)

This kimono styled dress was quite a challenge in the pattern making department.  Firstly you have to decide if the wrap over is an authentic two-layer wrap or if you are going to seam the pieces together.  I've gone for the two layer option and included a zip in the CB seam as the only place where the two bodice layers join.

Pattern Puzzle - The Japan Skirt - no block required!

Rectangle skirts are nothing new.  What maybe new is the way you work your rectangle.  This particular pattern has been hanging on my pattern rail for at least 8 years.  Originally developed for merino ponti, grading up and down in sizes allows you to cut this pattern in a variety of knit and woven fabrics.

Pattern Puzzle - Waterfall Drape Skirt

Zuzana Grimm had her ahha moment on Saturday afternoon and solved the #PatternPuzzle.  Julie and Vicki gave her a good start in the morning with some great detail.  The weird pattern shape is a one piece pattern for a ruched jersey skirt with waterfall drape.  Although I am using the basic skirt block for woven fabric, I will select a block two sizes smaller than usual so I can cut the pattern in a two-way stretch jersey.  That would give me a fit with negative ease of 6cm for this style.

Pattern Puzzle - Tucked Drape Skirt

Our Saturday's #PatternPuzzle attracted a few new players and some very interesting answers.  Turning the pattern shape upside-down for the puzzle post will always challenge perceptions.  By the afternoon Doris had identified the shape as a skirt, then Andra gave us the detail of all the features in the skirt.  These draped skirt styles are a good place to start if you are new to draped patterns.

Pattern Puzzle - Jersey Ruche Skirt

Last Saturday's #PatternPuzzle was one of those strange shapes that gave little idea of it's final shape.  But in true form our fans were able to solve the puzzle.  The style we are looking at is a ruched, drape skirt that relies on the two-way stretch of the fabric to pull over the hips without a zipper opening.

Pattern Puzzle - Homage to Charles James 1950

A huge thanks for the fabulous effort from everyone over the weekend to solve this strange #PatternPuzzle.   This week we featured three pattern pieces as part of a garment, rather than the usual all-in-one pattern piece.  The diagram below shows how these different shapes sew together to make a panelled yoke in an evening skirt.

Pattern Puzzle - Dior Draped Skirt

This treasure was discovered in the archives the The Metropolitan Museum along with thousands of other beautiful pieces.  Much to my surprise I discovered that it is a fairly recent design by John Galliano for The House of Dior in 1998.

For this puzzle the focus is on the skirt and not the tailored halter neck top.  The combination of the well organised waterfall drape at the back of the skirt and the cowl drape in the front of the skirt was fascinating to me.

PatternPuzzle - Two Twist Skirt Patterns

In developing the ideas for this puzzle it occurred to me that there are many ways to make a twist skirt pattern.  What came out of that process are the pattern images below that offer two ways to cut a twist skirt.

The sketches below give you an idea of the anticipated results of the different styles of twist.  If you'd like to learn my method for creating Twist Drape Patterns I have a detailed worksheet for making Jersey Twist Patterns.   The first sketch and pattern on the left is the single twist, and the sketch and pattern on the right are for the double twist.  In the first we twist the lower skirt of the main pattern and in the other we twist two tail shape pieces and join them back to the skirt.

Pattern Puzzle - Skirt Twist

With this weeks post of the pattern solution and details I firstly must apologise for the delay in posting.  It turns out my original pattern shape was not entirely accurate.  As I prepared this post I realised that the pattern shape would not necessarily achieve the fit I had sketched in the design drawing.  This is not an uncommon problem when translating design drawings to actual patterns, which is why we often have to sample a couple of times to perfect the fit.

If you'd like to learn my method for creating Twist Drape Patterns I have a detailed worksheet for making Jersey Twist Patterns. For just a few dollars you'll get the same training you'd get if you came to the workshop in my studio.

Pattern Puzzle - Ruche Skirt with Fishtail

Starting with the sketch: This is a idea from my Sketchbook from at least 3-4 years ago.  I believe I found it in a forecast magazine of that time (Textile View).  The design is elegant but may have some inherent problems to be dealt with in the first toile/prototype.
