Latest from Studio Faro
For the last few months, I've been focussed on getting more patterns and pattern making worksheets online. This post is a bit of a catch-up for those still connected to me via this blog. Each of the following images links to a new blog post on the website...

Kimono Twist - First Sample
Inspired by fans, I've finally had a go at the Kimono Twist Dress from the Pattern Puzzles series. My first pattern was cut from a knit kimono block that I made from my Basic Knit Block. I used a mid-weight two-way stretch jersey in a near-block aubergine. And although I've identified some issues for improvement, this first sample's not too shabby.
If you'd like to learn my method for creating Twist Drape Patterns I have a detailed worksheet for making Jersey Twist Patterns. For just a few dollars you'll get the same training you'd get if you came to the workshop in my studio.
You'll find this dample post in my FREE Members Area - Kimono Twist - First Sample

Print and Plaid Trend - Design Development
Waistcoats
This has to be one of the best things to do! Endless ideas, not all of them good, but a good chance I'll like at least one of them enough to make it. The Print & Plaid Trend is one of my long time favourites. I suppose that means it's not really a fashion trend but a personal preference.
I'll be selecting one of these designs to make a pattern and sample. Which one is your favourite?

TREND Confirmation - Perforated Fabric
If you have a keen interest in Fashion Design and would like to understand Trend Forecast, this post makes the connection between different sources of information used to verify fashion trends for each new season.
Here at the studio I teach a workshop, Fashion Design Portfolio, that covers seasonal trends and design development for the fashion industry. This is my Trend Board for the Perforated Fabric Trend:

First Sample - Pinstripe Panel Skirt
Do you remember the Pinstripe Panel Skirt? Blogged in May 2014, and first sampled by Capital Chic, this very creative piece of corporate wear is stylish, wearable and very popular. :)

THE WRAP DRAPE DRESS - Sampled!
The #PatternPuzzle sample this week is The Wrap Drape Dress from earlier in the year. You can pop back to the original post for a refresh of all the pattern making instructions. Janine Kroes of enina-j collection in the Netherlands has sampled our design for her new collection and sent us some photos from the sampling.

Garment Pleating - Homage to Issey Miyake
While I wait for the local pleating house to finish their summer vacation, I'm moving onto the second phase of the Permanent Pleating Series - Garment Pleating. In this series I'll be discussing whole garment pleating as originally inspired by the work of Issey Miyake (Pleats Please).
Design's suitable for Whole Garment Pleating
The most important quality in a garment design that you intend to 'pleat after make' is the flat, almost two dimensional nature of the garment before the pleating process. More detail...

Pattern Puzzle - Wrap Layer Top #1
The designs used in last Saturdays #PatternPuzzle conversation are the surplus design developments from the Layered Shirt post of a few weeks ago. They have been lying around on the work table all that time and I did't have the heart to throw them out. Then I realised that was because I really wanted these two tops for myself. They were just the kind of thing I needed in my wardrobe. Saved from the shredder, these designs are similar but different enough to entice you to make both. I will be dealing with them in two separate posts to make sure I cover all the detail. :)

Pattern Puzzle - Gathered Shirt
Once again I am attracted to the loose-fit silhouette that is such a staple in most fashion ranges at the moment. And somehow I think it may also indicate a desire to bring my own wardrobe up-to-date. This cocoon shaped, gathered drape shirt would behave at its best if you were to cut it in a light, drapey woven such as silk satin or a crepe de chine.

Pattern Puzzle - Layered Shirt
This weeks puzzle is very much a summer weight shirt that I imagine is a cotton voile or organdie. The semi-transparent fabric is used I'm many layers (2-3) to create drape and subtle colour variation in the layering. The front opening of the shirt is a concealed, button front hidden under the front drape.

Pattern Puzzle - Cowl Tee
It never ceases to amaze me how often I am drawn to this particular style of cowl drape. You will find many examples in the #PatternPuzzles that have been presented here over the past few years. This puzzle stars with the simplest of shapes and become an elegant tunic top.

Pattern Puzzle - Drape Skirt
This week's #PatternPuzzle is the simplest addition to a classic pencil skirt. With the introduction of a front left side panel you are able to include the drape shape easily around the waist and into the panel seam.

Pattern Puzzle - Double Drape Maxi
You may be forgiven for thinking that we often torture the stuffing out of our fabulous #PatternPuzzle fans. Well, last Saturday was no exception. I did a slightly tricky thing with a 'grown-on hood' and it was enough to make the pattern shapes very hard to read. The idea I have is to cut this dress in a merino jersey. That could be either a one-way or two-way stretch jersey.
The Double Drape in the Maxi refers to the #CowlDrape on the back of this dress and the #GatheredDrape on the centre front seam. The hood styling may also be considered a #CowlDrape with the large tuck and the centre back line on the fold.

Pattern Puzzle - Transparent Bomber Jacket
Inspired by a delicate sketch in my visual diary from many years ago, the Transparent Bomber Jacket is a summer season take on a recent winter trend for classic bomber jackets. This design will rely on a lightweight transparent fabric that will gather well with the elastic bands and still hold a soft, full shape.

Pattern Puzzle - Drape Cape Top
As a general rule, capes and ponchos are not at the top of my shopping list. I know they are currently on-trend but I find so many of them to be either unattractive or impractical. We don't have cold enough weather here to benefit from the tradition wool cape with cozy hood or wrap. However the more recent lightweight, knit designs in shrugs and capes are probably a lot easier to wear and may even have a functional place in our trans-seasonal wardrobes.

Pattern Puzzle - Tucked Drape Tops
A huge thanks to all the fans that turned up on Saturday to play and watch the #PatternPuzzle. This weeks puzzle was less complex than most but potentially such a favourite for the wardrobe. Our post this week has in fact two versions of the Tucked Drape Top, the first with two large tucks facing each other on the front neckline the the second with one large tuck only in the front neckline.

Pattern Puzzle - Cowl Back Tee
We have had a good run lately with Cowl Drape styles and this week is no exception with the Cowl Back Tee. Last week was the Vivienne Drape Dress featuring a Cowl Drape on the neckline and in the skirt. And two weeks ago a reworking of The Drape Shift in a woven fabric for The Drape Shift - Woven. You might say we are coming at the #CowlDrape thing from all directions.

Pattern Puzzle - Vivienne Drape Dress
It was another short race last Saturday as the first correct answer came in 7 minutes after posting. #PatternPuzzle fans are proving to be fast and accurate leaving me with an enormous challenge to find yet more interesting ideas to unpack.
This weeks design is a homage to one of my favourite designers, Vivienne Westwood. The understated neckline drape and off centre skirt drape are characteristic of her wonderful draped dresses.

Pattern Puzzle - Classic Drape Dress
The idea behind this weeks #PatternPuzzle is to use a classic drape style to show how the fitting darts in your bodice block turn into drape according to design. And to also have a go at making my pattern making technique clearer for everyone.

Pattern Puzzle - The Kimono Wrap Dress
We had a fantastic time on Saturday with the #PatternPuzzle. Jump over to FB and check out the most amazing contributions made by our fans, with drawings no less. :)
This kimono styled dress was quite a challenge in the pattern making department. Firstly you have to decide if the wrap over is an authentic two-layer wrap or if you are going to seam the pieces together. I've gone for the two layer option and included a zip in the CB seam as the only place where the two bodice layers join.
